Marshmallow Chick Inspired Wall Hanging

March 5, 2023 by OurWrensNest Leave a Comment

Create a fun Spring wall hanging inspired by those iconic marshmallow chicks! Recently as I was going through my Spring decor, I noticed I need a bit of a refresh. It has been a few years since I've added something different. I got to thinking what would I like to add, and I looked over at a package of those marshmallow chicks. Naturally I love chicks, and I've always had a little obsession with Peeps, and their fun shapes! I searched for the perfect wall hanging, and I couldn't find it anywhere. Nothing like what I wanted. So I went back to the drawing board, literally! I decided I was going to make my own wall hanging! I grabbed my iPad, and started to sketch. In no time at all, I ...

Perfect Pickled Eggs!

April 17, 2022 by OurWrensNest Leave a Comment

A Sweeter Take on Pickled Eggs! Today we are talking about pickled eggs. Wait, don't go! Poor pickled eggs sometimes don’t get any respect! With the proper recipe, pickled eggs can be such a great treat. We started making pickled eggs a few years ago when the chickens started laying a ton of eggs in the Spring. We tried a few different recipes, and some did not taste good at all. Some recipes had too much vinegar, and others just tasted plain yucky. We were determined to find the perfect recipe! As I usually end up doing I started to combine my favorite ingredients and make my own recipe. This recipe we finally found we just loved is actually called β€œPerfect Pickled Eggs” in my ...

Vintage Inspired Bunny Cake!

April 4, 2022 by OurWrensNest Leave a Comment

After a long winter, it's fun to find fresh, fun desserts to make for your family and friends. A cake that immediately comes to mind when I think of Spring and Easter is the traditional bunny cake! This easy-to-make bunny cake was created and popular in the 1970s and continues to be a cake that many still make today. The original cake was decorated using shredded coconut. There are now many different variations of this cake. My Grandma and Mom both have their own special ways of making a bunny cake, and here is how I ...

Homemade Ramp Butter!

January 30, 2022 by OurWrensNest 2 Comments

Create an amazing spread using fresh and simple ingredients. Spring will be here soon in Ohio and it's such a great time of year. The flowers come up, garden prep is on the mind, our poultry brooders will be full of new babies, and wild edibles will start to appear. The one thing I think about all winter long is when will we harvest our first ramps. Ramps are wild leeks and are so amazingly versatile. During the Spring we harvest ramps and preserve them in various ways including pickling, and drying to use throughout the year. An easy way to preserve ramps is to turn them into ramp butter. This "compound butter" can be spread on your favorite bagel, to add some great flavor to ...

Preserving Ramps

October 6, 2020 by OurWrensNest 2 Comments

Learn How We Preserve and Dehydrate This First Sign of Spring! We wrote this article back in 2020, and still continue to dehydrate our ramps this way! Allium Tricoccum aka ramps is a wild onion found in North America. Ramps hearken the arrival of spring to Ohio. There is something incredibly special about the dirty, oniony smell during the first harvest. It's a sign of new life, time to put away the winter gear and get ready for the spring and summer ahead. When ramps are in season we make sure whatever we harvest is put to good use. A favorite way to preserve ramps is to dehydrate them for use all year long! Every time I open one of my mason jars of dried ramps I'm reminded of the ...
